Born in the Dominican Republic in 1935 and raised in New York, flautist/composer/producer Johnny Pacheco started out playing charanga, recording several albums for Al Santiago’s Alegre label and becoming a cult hit in West Africa with his Cuban inflected songs, influencing Orchestra Baobab among others. In 1964 he co-founded Fania Records with Jerry Masucci. Heading up what was to become the most famous Latin label in the world did not stop him recording, producing and performing in his own right as well as acting as musical director with the Fania All Stars.
